Getting Started in the Tax Industry

I have a PTIN. Can I start preparing tax returns?

A valid PTIN is required for individuals who prepare or substantially assist in preparing federal tax returns for compensation.

Your PTIN identifies you as the paid preparer. Your overall business setup, software access and electronic filing structure may involve additional steps depending on how you plan to operate.

What is the difference between a PTIN and an EFIN?

A PTIN belongs to the individual paid tax return preparer.

An EFIN is issued by the IRS to an approved e-file provider and is used as part of the electronic filing process.

They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

Can two tax preparers share the same PTIN?

No. Each paid federal tax return preparer who is required to have a PTIN must obtain and use their own PTIN.

Do I need experience before purchasing professional tax software?

Professional tax software is a tool for preparing returns; it does not replace tax knowledge or professional training.

If you are new to tax preparation, LuxeLogic also offers education and training options that can help you strengthen your foundation before or while building your tax business.

I'm brand new. Where should I start with LuxeLogic?

Your starting point depends on what you already have. Some professionals begin with tax training, others already hold a PTIN and need software, while others are preparing to pursue their own EFIN and operate as an ERO.

Contact LuxeLogic if you need help deciding which path makes the most sense for your current stage.

Can LuxeLogic help me move from PTIN holder to ERO?

LuxeLogic provides guidance, education and business resources for tax professionals working toward greater independence, including professionals preparing to apply for their own EFIN and establish an ERO structure.

Software Questions

What professional tax software does LuxeLogic offer?

LuxeLogic offers professional tax software options including TaxSlayer Pro, OLT Pro and TaxWise solutions.

Available packages may vary, so review the current Tax Software collection for specific offerings and product details.

How do I know whether TaxSlayer Pro, OLT Pro or TaxWise is best for me?

The best fit depends on factors such as your workflow, experience, office structure, expected return volume and the features you value most.

LuxeLogic can help you compare available options before you choose.

Do I have to use only one software platform?

Not necessarily. Your software setup should be based on your business needs and the products or licenses available to you.

LuxeLogic offers multiple professional software options so tax professionals are not limited to one platform across every situation.

Is the software web-based or desktop-based?

That depends on the software product and package you select. Different professional tax software platforms may have different installation, browser, desktop or cloud-access options.

Review the product description for the specific software you are considering.

Does professional tax software include state returns?

State return availability and any related pricing depend on the specific software product or package.

Review the product details before purchase or contact LuxeLogic if you need help comparing packages.

Can the software prepare business returns?

Business-return capability depends on the platform and package purchased.

If business return preparation is important to your office, confirm that the specific package you choose includes the forms and return types you need.

Can I offer bank products with my tax software?

Bank product availability depends on the software setup, participating banking partners, program requirements and approval.

Purchasing tax software does not by itself guarantee acceptance into a bank product program.

Do you offer no-split software options?

LuxeLogic offers professional software structures designed for tax professionals and offices seeking greater control over their business.

Review the current software product description for the fee structure and package terms before purchasing.

Can my existing client information be transferred to new software?

Data conversion or client migration options depend on the software platform, prior software and available conversion tools.

Contact LuxeLogic before switching if client migration is an important requirement for your office.

Can multiple preparers work under one office setup?

Multi-preparer, user and office capabilities vary by platform and package.

If you have a team, tell LuxeLogic how your office is structured so we can help you review the most appropriate available setup.

Does buying software automatically make me an ERO?

No. Professional tax software is a business tool. Purchasing software does not by itself grant ERO status or an EFIN.

Tax Training & Professional Development

Does LuxeLogic offer self-paced tax training?

Yes. LuxeLogic offers self-paced tax education options designed for professionals who want the flexibility to learn on their own schedule.

Is self-paced tax training good for beginners?

Self-paced training can be a strong option for new tax professionals who need to build foundational knowledge without being tied to a live classroom schedule.

Always review the specific course description to make sure the course level matches your experience.

What topics are covered in tax training?

Topics vary by course and program and may include filing status, dependents, income, adjustments, deductions, credits, due diligence, federal tax law and return-preparation concepts.

Refer to the individual training product for the exact curriculum.

Is tax training the same as continuing education?

Not always. A training course can be educational without necessarily qualifying for IRS continuing education credit.

If you specifically need CE credit, choose a course or program that clearly states the applicable continuing education credit.

Can I complete my training from my phone or computer?

Access depends on the specific training platform and course format. Review the product details for device and access requirements.

How long do I have access to a self-paced course?

Access periods vary by training product. Check the specific course description for the current access period before purchasing.

Tax preparers must meet the applicable IRS requirements for the program, including the required education, an active PTIN for the applicable year and required consent obligations.

What education is generally required for the AFSP?

In general, non-exempt preparers seeking an AFSP Record of Completion complete 18 hours of IRS-approved continuing education: a 6-hour Annual Federal Tax Refresher course, 10 hours of other federal tax law and 2 hours of ethics.

Certain preparers may qualify for an AFTR exemption and follow different education requirements.

What is the AFTR course?

The Annual Federal Tax Refresher is a course covering filing-season issues and federal tax law updates. For applicable AFSP participants, it also includes a comprehension test administered by the CE provider.

Does LuxeLogic offer Ethics and Federal Tax Law CE?

Available education may include Ethics, Federal Tax Law, AFTR and other qualifying topics. Review the specific CE product or package for the credits included.

Will my CE be reported to my PTIN account?

For qualifying IRS-approved CE courses, reporting follows the applicable provider and IRS reporting process.

Be sure the name and PTIN information you provide for CE registration are accurate.

Do I receive a certificate after completing CE?

Certificate availability depends on the specific course and completion requirements. Review the course details for the documentation provided after successful completion.
